Recorded over a long weekend in March of 2013, Baltimore-based Pushing Giants’ debut EP centers around the songwriting and soulful voice of frontman and guitarist Devon O’Hara. Inspired by the classic blues of the fifties and sixties as well as the revivalist acts of recent years, the album was recorded almost entirely live and the deliberately murky production hearkens back to the sound of Chess Studios, “The Basement Tapes” and “Exile on Main Street.”
Driven by the rhythms (and occasional backing vocals) of percussionist Matt Griffen, the six-track EP features primarily uptempo rockers (“87 Times,” “Little Red”) as well as more subdued grooves (“Bumper Cars”, “Shadow”), provides a unique combination of sounds not readily heard in mainstream radio.
